THE PUBLIC LIBRARY

The riverfront Civic Center (not to be confused with the Des Moines Civic Center auditorium built in the 1970s) developed slowly but with architectural care from the time the cornerstone for the Des Moines Library was laid in 1901. Even before that, it was a sign of political will that the city engineered a three-way transaction to vacate the library site. The library would go on the west bank at Locust, long occupied by the Des Moines arsenal, which in exchange was granted rights to the east bank site that had been set aside for a state museum. With some presumed financial settlement, the museum would later purchase its own land when the state was ready to build. It went smoothly, or somewhat so. A few businessmen objected that the riverfront library would be too far from downtown. Strangely, the Women’s Club expressed doubts, perhaps because the Des Moines River was still unbeautiful.
